In West Africa, CMR has had a long track record in capacity building of the Mauritanian fisheries research institute IMROP.
From 1998 – 2005 this activity took place in cooperation with the Netherlands institute for fisheries research (RIVO). During these years, acoustic surveys were introduced in Mauritania and an observer program was set up on board Dutch trawlers in Mauritania.
Furthermore CMR assisted in the creation of an FAO working group for small pelagics in West Africa. In 2006-2008, CMR conducted a joined project with IMROP on the improvement of catch statistics for the industrial fleet. At the moment, CMR supports IMROP in the establishment of an observer program for the industrial fleet in Mauritania.
In the South Pacific, CMR conducts an observer program on board pelagic trawlers from the European Union. In this area CMR participates on behalf of the European Union in meetings of the scientific committees of the South Pacific Regional management Organisation (SPRFMO).
Apart from its core business in Mauritania and the Pacific, CMR does short-term consultancy missions to other countries, mainly in Africa and South America.
